Know your audience is such a cliché when it comes to Creative Writing

Know your audience is such a cliché writing advice. Perhaps its helpful when you are writing for a particular audience and you already know your crowd. For emerging writers, knowing what you are interested to write about is more important. Writing comes first, the audience comes next. At university, corporate writing and perhaps magazines' articles writing, knowing your audience is important, you write pretty to an established standards and interests.

I differ on knowing my audience before the creative work is published. Not exactly knowing my audience before publishing on this blog is freeing to explore the writing and the ideas that comes out of this medium. Sometime the immediate audience or even audience in the same era are not interested in particular artist, or writer body of work. Caring too much about what's the audience currently wants might rob you of your best creativity. Be brave and write creatively, you might discover an eloquent, tweet, song, poem, non-fiction article, short story or a novel in you.

What is the difference between TV Soap & TV Drama?

The difference is - from my own observations without googleing for the answer or checking a reputable journal that deals with this kind of topic- my answer is: A TV Soap never ends, it goes on and on like Neighbours and the Bold and the Beautiful on most days of the year for years.  I'm on and off watcher of the two soaps because the plot never ends and you can easily pick up the plot and catch up on the scriptwriters new endeavour. The time of the TV Soap is not aired at prime time, instead they are aired during the day up until 7:30pm. Also the TV Soap is 1/2 hour format with daily time slot. On the other hand TV dramas like Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Packed to the Rafters and Offspring are one hour format with prime time air time. And usually they run for one season with less than twenty episodes to go until their next return in another season or in another year. So they give us the viewer a bit of a break. Why I’m watching My Kitchen Rules, and it isn’t for the cooking

I’m an average cook, and cooking is not one of my interests, but I watch My Kitchen Rules to see the human drama showing up in competition and against the clock. It is life; there are the friends and foes. And all the human emotions that flares up. It is not bad they serve up gourmet dishes and advice, and the dilemma of under cooking and over cooking. But what makes this show exciting, its changing locations and mini competitions that focus on smaller teams doing asides competitions against each others give them fancy and epic names such as the ‘Sudden Death’ at other times   “Cook off”.

I'm back to blog

So what I've been doing since my last blog in April 2011? Reading novels, watching TV, working on that work promotion that I still did not get, studying, facebooking, tweeting and keeping indoors from the cold and rain. But the dream is still alive, I like the art of writing and the expresion of it all. My next piece to publish on this blog is to write a feature or opinion piece about three Australian TV dramas from three different Australian TV stations and comparing and contrasting them. I actually asked on twitter if someone can send me the link to their article if they write about this three Australian drama, which I won't mention the TV series' names here, however, nobody replied.
